Canadian Government to Ban Certain Single-Use Plastics Within the Next 18 Months

According to a report by CTV on June 20, 2022, the Canadian government announced a ban on single-use plastic products, such as plastic bags and plastic lunch boxes. In addition to plastic bags and plastic lunch boxes, this “plastic ban” also includes single-use plastic utensils, plastic straws, plastic stirrers, and the plastic rings used to hold six-packs of canned beverages (a type of plastic product used to carry drinks).

Canada will become the first country in the world to ban the export of these six categories of single-use plastic products, and will prohibit the production and import of such products before the end of this year.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault and Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos jointly announced the government’s final plan yesterday. The plan will ban single-use plastic shopping bags, utensils, and products that use or contain plastics that are difficult to recycle. Takeout boxes, plastic rings for carrying four- or six-packs of beverages, stirrers, and straws (with some exceptions) will also be prohibited.

Starting at the end of 2022, Canada will formally ban businesses from importing or producing plastic bags and takeout boxes.

Starting at the end of 2023, these plastic products will no longer be sold in Canada.

By the end of 2025, not only will Canada stop producing and importing these plastic products, but the export of all such plastic products to other countries will also be banned from Canadian territory.

Canada’s goal is to achieve “zero plastic going into landfills, beaches, rivers, wetlands, and forests” by 2030, removing plastic from the natural environment.

Although the full ban on plastic bags, plastic lunch boxes, single-use plastic utensils, plastic straws, plastic stirrers, and six-pack plastic rings is still some time away, we must also begin looking for environmentally friendly alternatives.
